The Erosion of Democratic Values: Caretaker Government's Questionable Conduct in Election Process

In a troubling turn of events, the Supreme Court's directive to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to address the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) concerns about an uneven playing field in the upcoming general elections on February 8 has exposed the glaring issues with the caretaker government's handling of the electoral process.

The PTI's plea for a level playing field is not without merit, and the events leading up to the Supreme Court's intervention raise serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process. The allegations of harassment, raids, and impediments to political activities directed at PTI members are not only concerning but also indicative of a system that appears to be favoring one political party over others.

The incident involving the raid on former PTI leader Usman Dar's residence, coupled with the subsequent accusations against PML-N stalwart Khawaja Asif and the police, casts a dark shadow over the impartiality of the electoral environment. Justice Minallah's acknowledgment of the validity of the PTI's concerns and his questioning of why a single political party is being cornered underscore the seriousness of the situation.

The judiciary's intervention, while a welcome step, should not have been necessary if the caretaker government and the ECP had diligently upheld their responsibilities. The court's rebuke of the ECP officials, highlighting the questionable conduct and lack of a level playing field, is a damning indictment of the electoral process's current state.

The court rightly pointed out the absurdity of holding proceedings at Adiala Jail and questioned the ECP's apparent indifference to orders issued under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). Such actions not only undermine the democratic values enshrined in the Constitution but also erode the faith of citizens in the electoral process.

The PTI's petition, filed through Advocate Shoaib Shaheen, sheds light on the systemic issues plaguing the electoral process. The party's claims of being treated unfairly, denied the right to hold political gatherings, and facing legal action for engaging in legitimate political activities speak volumes about the erosion of democratic norms.

The caretaker government's responsibility is to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, and any actions to the contrary are a betrayal of the citizens' trust. The alleged illegal and tyrannical acts, including FIRs, raids, and MPO orders, not only violate the Constitution and the Elections Act, 2017 but also trample upon the fundamental rights of citizens.
