Remembering Mohammad Azam Khan: A Legacy of Public Service

In the heartland of Bajaur tribal district, a profound sense of loss and sorrow reverberates through the region and the nation as Voice For Peace extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Caretaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mohammad Azam Khan. His sudden demise at the age of 89 has left a void not only in the political landscape of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but also in the hearts of the people he served.

As Khan's nephew, Muhammad Ahmed Khan, revealed, just a day before his passing, he was in good health and had plans to visit Charsadda University the following Monday. This poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life underscores the profound impact that individuals like Mohammad Azam Khan can have on their communities.

Khan's legacy is one of distinguished public service, marked by his extensive and varied experience in government roles. As a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn, London, he held key positions in various governments, including serving as the minister for interior, capital administration, and development in the caretaker cabinet of ex-premier Nasir-ul-Mulk in 2018. He also played an essential role as the provincial minister for finance, planning, and development in the KP caretaker cabinet of CM Shamsul Mulk from 2007 to 2008.

Before these roles, Khan served as the chief secretary from 1990 to 1993 and chaired the Pakistan Tobacco Board. His unwavering dedication to the betterment of his province and his country shines through his decades of public service.

With Khan's passing, the provincial cabinet in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands dissolved, leading to a transition of power. According to former Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) secretary Kanwar Dilshad, the governor will assume authority until a new chief minister is elected. The constitutional provisions for this transition are well-established and are expected to be followed to maintain stability.

Khan's passing has elicited condolences from political leaders and colleagues, highlighting the respect and admiration he garnered. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar remembered him as an "honest and pious person" and offered prayers for the deceased’s family. Interim Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti and Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori also expressed their grief and offered their condolences. PPP leader Faisal Karim Kundi expressed deep sadness and extended his prayers to Khan’s family.
